How to Choose the Right Sized Upland Strap Vest
You can have the best upland strap vest on the market, but if it doesn't fit right, it's going to cost you. An ill-fitting vest shifts around on your shoulders, digs into your sides, and worst of all, gets in the way of your gun mount when it matters most. Getting sized correctly isn't complicated, but it does require knowing what to measure and why.
Step 1: Measure Your Midsection for Belt Size
The belt is the foundation of how your vest sits and carries throughout the day, so getting this measurement right is the most important step.
Here's how to do it correctly:
-
Use a soft measuring tape and loop it behind your lower back, just above your behind
-
Wrap it around to the front, just below your navel
-
Match that measurement to the corresponding belt size when you select your vest
The goal is to have the belt sitting below your waist on your hips as this is the most comfortable carry position for long days in the field. If your measurement lands at the upper end of a size and you prefer your shell pouches sitting more forward on your body, size up to the next belt size.
One thing worth noting: We have already factored in layering when building out our size ranges. **Do not size up just because you plan to wear a heavy jacket** - our sizing accounts for that. If you’re on the cusp of moving up from the MD/LG size to the XL/XXL size and spend a lot of time in a heavy jacket, it may be worth jumping up to the next size. Otherwise, we do not typically recommend this.
Step 2: Measure Your Torso for Harness Size
Once your belt size is dialed in, the next step is finding the right harness length. This ensures the shoulder straps sit correctly, the sternum strap lands in the right spot, and your gun mount stays completely unobstructed. Note- it may be beneficial to have someone assist with this measurement.
Here's how to measure your torso:
-
Using a soft measuring tape, find the bony bump at the back of your neck — that's your C7 vertebrae
-
Measure straight down to the top of your tailbone
-
Match that number to the torso size during your purchase
Something worth keeping in mind: if you have a large chest or bust, opt for the regular harness regardless of torso length — the additional length accounts for how the straps travel over the chest. And if your measurement comes in right at 20", go with the regular harness as well — this keeps the sternum strap sitting low and preserves a clean, open shoulder pocket for your gun mount. If you’re totally unsure, generally speaking, adult men taller than 5’4 tend to be in the Regular size torso length.
